The Cadèmia Siciliana (Sicilian Academy, pron. ka-day-mya see-shee-lya-na) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which was founded at the end of 2016 by a group of dedicated Sicilian language activists.
Our mission is Sicilian language research, education and activism.
A language is a reality in constant evolution, and so is Sicilian. So, thanks, i.e., to the great research produced by the Centro di Studi Filologici e Linguistici Siciliani (Centre of Sicilian Philological and Linguistic Studies), supported by the University of Palermo, we strive to keep studying and researching the evolving Sicilian linguistic landscape.
We promote education in and about Sicilian language, through a wide range of outlets, such as websites, pages/accounts on social networks, academic publications and so on.
And last but not least, we promote activism in and for the Sicilian language: every person speaking and interested in Sicilian is invited to join us in “spreading the word”. Our dream is to stop language shift and restore a healthy image for Sicilian and restore our pride and self respect for our mother tongue.
In order to facilitate this we act as a facilitator of authoritative materials on Sicilian language, which we are always open to receive and propagate.
We would like, one day, to be considered an authority in the field of Sicilian language, like in example the Académie française for the French language or the Accademia della Crusca for Italian.
